Have you ever tried listening to your body?
|
It sounds counter-intuitive in a culture that promotes restrictive fad diets, obsessive physical fitness, and constant self-criticism of our own appearance, to listen to your cravings and eat what your body is asking for.
I'm not talking about cravings for french-fries or sugar-laced snacks in the afternoon, although I would argue these cravings are indicators that your body needs something...
I mean, when you cut out all the junk from your diet and your body starts to crave real foods again.
It is an incredible experience!

When I did this, years ago, I noticed I had cravings for things I had never even liked or tasted before...
Seaweed, liver, and even dandelion blooms in spring!
When you take away refined sugar, artificial colors, and preservatives, your body can actually sort out what nutrients you are taking in (and which ones you aren't) when you eat certain foods.
There is a really cool book called The Dorito Effect, that does a great job of explaining our bodies' natural mechanisms for intuitive eating and how these mechanisms are undermined by processed-food. Large processed-food companies have been so successful at manipulating our bodies' abilities to tell us what we need to eat through cravings, that we don't even crave the foods our body actually needs anymore...
I don't know about you BJ, but to me that sounds a bit scary!
The good news is, that once you get that power back- and you can indeed get it back, once you stop eating refined sugar, seed oils, artificial colors, and preservatives- it feels so good to just be able to eat what your body wants, when your body wants it.

This is a huge reason why my cattle-rancher friends and I do what we do.
We want to source our food from beings that were able to eat the things they needed to, because their bodies were telling them exactly how to eat in order to stay happy and healthy.
Just like these animals, we want to be able to eat the things our bodies need to stay happy and healthy too.
We want this freedom for you as well.

We want to give you the power to get the most out of your food!
When you order your meat through Taste of the Wind, we always give you the choice to take home the bones (for broths, marrow, etc) and the organ meats, as part of our pledge to use as much of the animal as possible.
Having the ability to enrich my family's diet with things like organ meats and to participate in nature's grand cycle of nutrients by ensuring nothing goes to waste is so fulfilling... It literally makes me feel good from the inside out.
For me, there is no greater calling, but I'm going to be totally honest with you BJ...
There is a limit to what we can do when the animals that nourish us are processed in an inspected facility.
When animals are processed in packaging plants, the amount of those animals that go to waste is just insane!
The amount of pounds of waste our country produces in a year (of hides alone) that go to the landfill just makes me sick. And we choose to surround ourselves with plastic-based substitutes for textiles that could be so much more sustainable if we were to fully utilize these by-products of meat production (leather, hair, and wool).
When you order your meats from us, we are able to take the hides, skulls, and a couple of other by-products home with us so we can convert them into beautiful and sustainable home decor.
But what about the edible parts?
I know first-hand that our health would improve as a society and a culture, if we all made a little more effort to waste less in our country.
One simple step would be to start eating a little more nose-to-tail.

I know for some people this can be a stretch, but it's actually so easy!
When you source your meats from us, we set you up with recipes and tips for eating every nutritious and delicious piece of the animal.
In our modern-day society we can even take a pill (dried organ-meats powder contained inside a collagen-based capsule) if we just can't fathom the idea of eating something like a kidney or a liver outright.
This is an acceptable option for some, but we realize there are some people who do actually want to take their own nourishment into their own hands. (I am one of those people myself.)
|
If you want the honor of converting your own nourishment from on-the-hoof to in-the-freezer, we always make that option available. There is nothing standing in your way from using every single piece of that animal, and anything you do not wish to fully utilize will be used by us to provide nourishment to our family, our working dogs, or our working soils- not the landfill.
I'm not here to shove animal butchery down your throat if it is not something you are comfortable doing, but you need to know that the option is there for you if you chose to take the leap and learn what it takes first-hand. The pathway is there for you to take your rightful place in the cycle of nature and honor the animals that feed you by not wasting one single bit of nourishment that comes from them.
We are here to empower you in whatever capacity that may be, and always with the most utter respect for the animals that provide us nourishment, flavor, and joy.
